Magnum Hops

Magnum HopsIf you are looking for a hop variety to kick up your bitterness without affecting the flavor or aroma of your beer much, then consider using Magnum hops.

The relatively high alpha acid content makes this a good clean bittering hop… although the oil content is relatively high, it has no distinct aroma.

This is one of the few universal hops that can be used in just about any beer style to add bitterness.

Here are some of the most important characteristics of this hop variety:

Alpha:Beta Ratio: 2.0
Alpha Acids: 10.0 – 14%
Beta Acids:
4.5 – 7.0%
Co-humulone:
24 – 30% of alpha acids

Total Oils: 1.9 – 3.0 mL per 100 grams
Myrcene: 30 – 45% of total oils
Humulene: 25 – 40% of total oils

Having no distinct aroma, makes finding a possible substitution a bit tough without adding flavor or aroma to beer… I would consider using something like Columbus hops or Newport hops, which are similar in alpha acid content, and have somewhat mild aromas…
